The Use of a Triple-Emitter, UV-C Energy Disinfection System to Reduce CAUTI and CLABSI Rates
In 2014, Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC), which is a part of Hackensack Meridian Health, was experiencing an increase in Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) and Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI) in its Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
To address the issue, a multidisciplinary committee was established and an Action Plan was implemented in the fourth quarter 2014.
In addition to reviewing cleaning protocols, chemical disinfection methods and bedside practices, the committee introduced a triple emitter, UV-C energy disinfection system into its bundle of best practices to see if increasing the hygiene of the patient care environment would impact the CAUTI and CLABSI rates.
