PSQH IFS: Recounting the Cost of CAUTIs

The report looks at a study that found the cost of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) is actually much higher than many have traditionally believed. While most say the average cost of treating a CAUTI is $1,000, the study, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, found that the figure is too low. In some cases, it’s 10 times too low.

By 2020, the Department of Health and Human Services wants to see CAUTI rates to be cut by 50% in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and ambulatory surgical centers. This means organizations must take a new look at how they prioritize catheter infections.
