Philips VISICU eICU Sepsis Management Program Promotes Early Severe Sepsis Identification and Intervention

Orlando, FL, December 7, 2009 — At the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care, Royal Philips Electronics introduced the eICU® Sepsis Management Program, a new clinical program that further expands the value of its Philips VISICU eICU Program. The eICU Sepsis Management Program enables Philips VISICU eICU customers to enhance sepsis identification and intervention through automation and standardization.

According to the Society for Critical Care Medicine, severe sepsis strikes an estimated 750,000 people in the United States each year and is a leading cause of death in intensive care units. The eICU Sepsis Management Program leverages eICUremote monitoring technology and clinical decision support to improve communication and collaboration among care teams in the treatment of severe sepsis patients. The program gives health systems tools to automate and accelerate key steps of severe sepsis screening, to drive earlier identification and improved sepsis bundle compliance.

The eICU Sepsis Management Program implemented at Banner Desert Hospital, part of Phoenix-based Banner Health, has yielded improvements in identifying and treating patients with severe sepsis. According to Crystal Jenkins, RN MHI, senior clinical manager of Banner iCare, “The eICU Sepsis Management Program provides us with an improved method for early identification and continuous screening for sepsis.” The results from Banner’s use of the eICU Sepsis Management Program will be presented at the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM) annual Critical Care Congress, January 9-13, 2010, in Miami, FL.

Along with the eICU Sepsis Management Program, Philips Healthcare offers additional solutions to improve identification of severe sepsis. By facilitating earlier clinical intervention, these solutions allow hospitals to better address severe sepsis, helping to save more lives and achieve the objectives set forth by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and other related initiatives.

Philips VISICU is leading the transformation of critical care through its eICU Program. Using remote monitoring technology and clinical intelligence, critical care resources are leveraged to enhance specialist access, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs.
