Leapfrog Group Announces 2024 Top Hospitals and Top ASCs

The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on healthcare safety and quality, on December 17 announced the 2024 recipients for their elite annual Top Hospital Award and Top Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) Award. This national recognition is one of the most competitive honors U.S. hospitals and surgery centers can earn for excellence in patient safety and quality of care.

This year, 134 hospitals earned the Top Hospital Award, including eight Top Children’s Hospitals, 36 Top General Hospitals, 15 Top Rural Hospitals, and 75 Top Teaching Hospitals. This represents less than 6% of all eligible hospitals in the U.S.

A total of 31 ASCs earned the Top ASC Award. ASCs in nine surgical specialties are represented: gastroenterology, general surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, urology, neurological surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The award honors hospitals and ASCs that demonstrate the highest performance in the nation on quality and patient safety, including ethical billing and informed patient consent procedures, lower infection rates, maternity care safety, prevention of medication errors and surgical safety. The 2025 Top Hospital and ASC methodology will remain largely unchanged from 2024. However, each year Leapfrog evaluates its award standards and continuously elevates the criteria for achieving each award. Among the criteria likely to be elevated next year are standards for billing ethics and informed consent.
