Improving Patient Care with Portals, Clinical Analytics and More
Four new Stories of Success! case study program selections are now available on the HIMSS website.
June 9, 2011—The value of health information technology can be best highlighted by looking at its use, and resulting outcomes, in real-life situations. Consider the following four examples from new case studies in the Stories of Success! program from HIMSS and co-sponsors American Society for Quality (ASQ), National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF).?1. At the Institute for Family Health, New York, NY, tracking data showed that patients using the portal ?sent over 27,000 messages to their providers requesting 4,500 prescription refills and scheduling 4,100 appointments. 2. Miramont Family Medicine, Ft. Collins, Colo., has more than doubled, from 41% to 91%, the number of ?documented A1c tests, measuring blood sugar control for several months, for its patients with diabetes. 3. Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Va., used embedded analytics to study and help ?prevent multi-drug-resistant infections. 4. Weill Cornell, part of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, mapped data from over 19 agencies to a ?standard name to transform more than 12 million lab results so that providers can trend their data ?regardless of the agency.
Each case study represents outstanding accomplishments in the adoption and of use of health IT to fulfill national priorities recommended by the National Priorities Partnership (NPP) and The Joint Commission’s (TJC) National Patient Safety Goals. ? ?“Improving patient safety and quality remains an ongoing priority for HIMSS and all organizations involved with the Stories of Success! program. These four new case studies illustrate what healthcare organizations can accomplish when implementing health IT and use the available applications and data to improve the care of their patients,” said David A. Collins, MHA, CPHQ, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, Director, Healthcare Information Systems, for HIMSS.
