Capsule Introduces Enterprise Medical Device Connectivity™ Enabled by the Innovative Capsule Neuron™

Andover, MA, September 10, 2009 — Capsule (www.capsuletech.com), the leading provider of medical device connectivity, today announces the release of their new Enterprise Medical Device Connectivity Solution enabled by the Capsule Neuron™.

The Capsule Neuron, introduced at HIMSS 2009, now offers the ability to deliver device connectivity across the enterprise. When first introduced, the Capsule Neuron promised to be an expandable platform that could adapt and address a number of complex clinical workflows. The Enterprise Device Connectivity Solution is the first step in proving this flexibility because it truly adapts to the environment it operates in. Its design allows a facility to leverage existing technologies and completely integrates with caregiver work processes. And it gives hospitals the option to deploy connectivity throughout the enterprise so that all departments, not just high acuity, can enjoy the value that device integration has to offer. These benefits include saved nursing hours, reduced risk of documentation errors, and increased nursing time in direct patient care.

Enterprise connectivity can be achieved with the Capsule Neuron because it too was designed under the same open architecture and with the same principles that fostered the design of Capsule’s proven DataCaptor™ software for connectivity. “Capsule believes that all products and solutions we offer should have an open, flexible, scalable design that allows hospitals to leverage existing technologies and that will adapt to or optimize established clinical workflows rather than introducing new ones,” said Mark Morwood, Vice President of Product Management at Capsule.

The Capsule Neuron features a variety of deployment options to achieve these goals. First, hospitals can establish connectivity in all care areas of the enterprise by selecting their method of data collection — from continuous data collection for higher acuity environments such as critical care, to periodic and mobile data collection in medical-surgical environments, or a combination of the two. Second, the Capsule Neuron allows the hospital to positively associate a device to the patient through either: location, bar code, or auto-sensing using passive RFID (coming in 2010). Third, hospitals can leverage existing IT investments since the Capsule Neuron can run on a wired or wireless environment, is plug compatible with Capsule’s first generation terminal server and cable hardware, and its vendor neutral design allows hospitals to connect virtually any medical device to any information system. Moreover, the Capsule Neuron allows hospitals to change devices and systems without impacting the connectivity solution. Finally, the Capsule Neuron is a platform that is expandable and field upgradeable and will continue to evolve to offer future solutions such as auto sensing for enhanced positive patient association, wireless device connectivity and encounter reporting for trending and patient safety initiatives.

Capsule will be introducing their Enterprise Device Connectivity Solution at the Inaugural Medical Device Connectivity Conference in Boston, MA, September 10-11 and again at the 21st Annual IHI National Forum in Orlando, FL, December 6-9.
