Call for Nominations for Sherman Award

Nominations opened today for the 2017 Sherman Award for Engaging Patients. The award, which is sponsored by EngagingPatients.org, an online community dedicated to sharing best practices in patient and family engagement, is given in partnership with the National Patient Safety Foundation’s (NPSF) Lucian Leape Institute and Taylor Healthcare.

Established in 2014, the Sherman Award is dedicated to recognizing innovative work that has resulted in better, safer care and improved outcomes by engaging patients and families in their care. The award will be conferred at the NPSF’s 19th annual Patient Safety Congress in Orlando, Fla. on May 18. The winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Orlando for the Congress. Previous winners include the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Iora Health, OpenNotes and North Shore LIJ (now Northwell Health).

“Developing deep relationships with patients and their personal support networks will continue to be the key to engaging and activating patients. We know that as patient and family engagement increases, patient safety and outcomes improve,” said Mark O’Leary, chair of EngagingPatients.org’s advisory board and president of Taylor Communications.

A panel of judges will evaluate programs on the degree to which patient and families are involved in project design and implementation, measurable results, sustainability, and the ability to replicate the project.

“Greater patient and family engagement has been linked to more positive patient experience of care as well as improved outcomes and patient safety,” said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president and CEO of the National Patient Safety Foundation. “NPSF is pleased to collaborate with Engagingpatients.org in recognizing important and effective work toward patient and family engagement.”

Nominations will be accepted through March 3. Work must have occurred between January 1, 2016 and January 19, 2017. The official nomination form and full details about criteria for the Sherman Award are available at www.EngagingPatients.org/awardsubmissions.
