AONE Launches Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) Dissemination Initiative

AONE is now accepting applications for next hospital cohorts.

Washington, DC, May 1, 2009 — The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) today announced the next phase of its dissemination of the Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) initiative, a program to share a set of practical, easy-to-use tools that will help hospitals improve the quality and safety of patient care on medical and surgical units. AONE is adopting TCAB as part of its long-term goals to design patient care delivery models of the future and transform the culture of how nurses care for patients. Hospitals must submit applications by June 15, 2009 to participate in the new program.

This newly launched AONE TCAB program is based on the original collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), as well as the current dissemination project being completed by 67 hospitals as part of a $1.5 million grant to AONE from RWJF. During the last two years, AONE hospital teams have concentrated their work in the following six areas: safety and reliability, care team vitality, patient-centeredness, increased value, caring and transformational leadership.

“We were fortunate to have the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation over these last two years in working with the original 67 hospitals,” said AONE board president Donna M. Herrin, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE. “Our goal now is to focus on using the TCAB quality improvement techniques as a vehicle to change culture and the way we do our work.”

As AONE moves the dissemination forward with the opportunity for additional hospitals to participate, the work will build upon lessons learned from the 67 hospitals. Participating hospitals will learn the basics of the TCAB innovation process with a concentration on caring and transformational leadership. Principles learned can be applied to designing future models of care delivery that will ultimately transform the culture of how nurses care for patients.

AONE has developed a comprehensive set of options for members to participate in this new initiative, ranging from face-to-face meetings, conference calls and all-virtual participation. In order to be considered for this next phase of TCAB dissemination, AONE members may download an application and information packet from the AONE website at HYPERLINK “/”www.aone.org.
