NCPA, APhA and NASPA Partner with Mirixa Corporation to Launch RxWiki.com

The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA), and Mirixa Corporation have announced the beta launch of www.RxWiki.com, the first Web 2.0 medication therapy management encyclopedia for consumers, written, and edited by pharmacists. RxWiki is a free web site that publishes information about pharmaceutical, over-the-counter, and nutraceutical medications. RxWiki also serves as a community network for pharmacists to create and share information for their patients and consumers at large, and to collaborate in the advancement of medication therapy management (MTM).

"Today, 34% of all US online consumers use Wikipedia, and 7% of US online consumers with medical conditions used peer-edited health information in the past 12 months. The mission of RxWiki is to become the Web's most trusted source of medication information," said NCPA Executive Vice President and CEO Bruce Roberts.

RxWiki features include:

  • Medication content created by authorized pharmacists.

  • Latest articles from leading medical news services via RSS content syndication.

  • Weekly newsletter personaliz-ed for subscribing consumers.

  • Easy to integrate website "gadget" provides access to search RxWiki from pharmacy websites.

  • Free Toolbar provides search capabilities, updated information, and links to other resources.

"Mirixa is proud to partner with the NCPA, APhA and NASPA in the creation of RxWiki," said Don Hackett, chief executive officer of Mirixa Corporation. "The publishing model is powerful: pharmacists are able to contribute medications articles at a dramatically faster rate than historical methodologies, providing consumers with the most up-to-date information. We expect the consumer audience to build rapidly — witness the rapid growth of Wikipedia — drawn to RxWiki by its ease of use, timeliness, and the inherent trust consumers have in their local pharmacists."

New Medical Isolation Gowns Open ICU Doors to Young Visitors

Disposable pediatric gowns are a cost-effective resource for hospitals with open and flexible visitation policies. Studies show family support is good medicine.

Envision Medical Technology's disposable pediatric isolation gown is one of the newest products being offered by Masks n More, an Edmond, Oklahoma, company that markets medical masks and gloves, respirators, and related health care supplies through its Web site, www.masksnmore.com.

The child-size gowns are latex-free, and are available in two sizes to fit children from 2 to 12 years old. The non-woven polyethylene gowns are the first of their kind to come on the market, according to Tim Kawakami, co-owner of Masks n More. Kawakami said the new product is a timely one, for patients and their families as well as for hospital administrators battling to hold the line on expenses.

For medical consumers, the gowns are arriving at a time when an increasing number of hospitals are recognizing that family involvement and visitation for even the sickest patients can have a positive impact.

Consumers and healthcare institutions interested in ordering or learning more about Envision Medical Technology disposable pediatric isolation gowns can visit www.masksnmore.com or contact the company by telephone at (405) 340-8669. Free samples also are available, along with an extensive line of other medical supplies.

SimSuite Carotid T2(™) Program

Medical Simulation Corporation (MSC) has introduced the SimSuite® carotid T2 (Team Training) program. Phase I of the program, Staff Training, is designed for interventional lab staff that support carotid artery stenting as physicians become credentialed to perform the procedure. Phase II, Train-the-Trainers, offers a unique platform. Trainers who participate in the SimSuite carotid T2 program will be provided the clinical curriculum to return to their healthcare centers and train all nurses and technicians who care for carotid artery stent patients from admission to discharge. This educational program will enable a hospital to establish a skills-competency program for every team member who provides patient care for the carotid artery stent patient.

The core material is designed by Dr. Subbarao Myla, medical director of Cardiovascular Research and Endovascular Intervention, Hoag Memorial Hospital, and course director for the Medical Simulation Corporation carotid T2 program, in conjunction with other leading expert physicians in the arena of carotid artery disease and revascularization.

The mission of the program is to improve and support staff confidence for pre-, intra-, and post-procedure management of patients undergoing a carotid stent placement. "Not only should the interventional lab nurses and technologists be trained in carotid artery stenting, but the entire team should be involved. Participation in this training should also include staff in cath lab recovery, telemetry, interventional lab nurses and techs, neuro ICU, and CCU," states Lynne Jones, RN, RCIS, cardiac cath lab director at Tomball Regional Hospital and president for the Society of Invasive Cardiovascular Professionals.

The carotid T2 program includes simulation training, didactic instruction, live case video review, take home curriculum, and online Web-based training. For more information, please visit www.medsimulation.com.
