North Shore-LIJ Health System Selects SIS Anesthesia

Seamless integration of anesthesia and surgical information.

Atlanta, Georgia, June 14, 2011—Surgical Information Systems (SIS), a leader in perioperative information systems, announced that North Shore-LIJ Health System has extended its enterprise agreement with SIS by selecting SIS Anesthesia as its anesthesia documentation solution. The implementation will start at North Shore University Hospital and will continue at the other North Shore-LIJ Health Systems hospitals. SIS’ anesthesia information management system (AIMS), SIS Anesthesia, will be an integral part of North Shore’s current perioperative system, including anesthesia as part of the single perioperative record. It delivers anesthesia documentation as well as anesthesia business intelligence, enabling hospital surgery and anesthesia documentation to reside on a single database and streamlining and simplifying documentation. North Shore will also use SIS Perfusion, an application for the documentation of the cardiac bypass procedure.

“As the only specialty anesthesia system featuring a shared database with a perioperative system, SIS Anesthesia supports continuity of care with changes in the perioperative record being reflected in the anesthesia record as well. The seamless integration and improved ease-of-use leads to a higher quality of patient care,” said Dr. John Di Capua, Chairman of Anesthesiology at North Shore-LIJ and member of the Board of Directors at North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA). “This deepens our already outstanding relationship with SIS and enhances interoperability at one of the leading academic hospitals in the nation.”

“We continue to see clients recognizing the importance of anesthesia documentation with the increased adoption of SIS Anesthesia,” said SIS CEO Ed Daihl. “They appreciate the value of a surgery and anesthesia solution on a single database and a perioperative system that supports the consistency of the clinical narrative.”

This integrated enterprise system will result in a seamless flow of information between North Shore’s Allscripts Sunrise Clinical Manager health information system and SIS Anesthesia. It uses industry-standard practices for the exchange of discrete data thereby ensuring consistency and quality in clinical narrative. North Shore-LIJ Health System is the nation’s second-largest, non-profit, secular healthcare system, based on number of beds. The health system was the 2010 recipient of the National Quality Forum’s National Quality Healthcare Award, an honor that is presented annually to an outstanding, quality driven healthcare organization.

SIS has been focused on interoperability since its inception and continues to participate in industry-wide events—such as the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) annual conference and the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Connectathon—that focus on formulating interoperability standards and regulations.

“SIS’ commitment to interoperability ensures our success in building a meaningful electronic health record for our patients,” said John Bosco, CIO of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “SIS’ excellence in integration means that they are better able to support our need for an efficient flow of hospital data.”
