John Q. Sherman Award for Excellence in Patient Engagement Open for Nominations

Standard Register Healthcare in partnership with the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Lucian Leape Institute has announced that nominations have opened for the first annual John Q. Sherman Award for Excellence in Patient Engagement.

“The intent of the John Q. Sherman Award is to both recognize and inspire people and organizations to share their work,” said John King, president of Standard Register Healthcare. “By spotlighting best practices in patient and family engagement, we have the opportunity to accelerate the transformation in care delivery and a make measurable difference in people’s recovery and well-being.”

The Award will recognize one individual and one healthcare organization or provider institution for their successful work in engaging patients and families to improve care and patient outcomes. Work must have occurred between January 1, 2012 and January 31, 2014.

“Patient engagement is critical for achieving safer health care and for ensuring that care is being delivered according to each patient’s goals and preferences,” said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president of NPSF and the Lucian Leape Institute. “This award is a terrific way to recognize the innovative work being done in patient engagement, and to spread the best practices and lessons learned to other organizations.”

Achievements in patient and family engagement will be evaluated in six possible categories: innovation, transformation, collaboration, communication, inspiration and system change. Nominations can address as many of these categories as desired. However, achievement in all of the categories is not required for entry.

The official nomination form and full details about criteria for the John Q. Sherman Award are available at www.EngagingPatients.org/award. All nomination forms must be uploaded to the site no later than March 28, 2014.

Award submissions will be judged by a panel of experts identified by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) and Standard Register Healthcare. Awards will be presented at the 16th NPSF Patient Safety Congress in Orlando, Florida, May 14-16, 2014. The achievements of the award winners will be featured on EngagingPatients.org and promoted through other media channels, as will all of those qualified and verified nominees.
