Optimal Solutions Launches Personalized Patient Education At Metro Health

eVideon™ transforms the patient experience providing individualized health education at the click of a button.

Grand Rapids, MI, July 31, 2008 Leading software development and engineering firm Optimal Solutions, Inc., today announced the launch of its on-demand patient education component for the eVideon™ Interactive Patient Television System at Metro Health in Grand Rapids, Mich. Metro Health implemented Optimal Solutions' eVideon system in Fall 2007 to dramatically improve the comfort and care of patients at its facility. Patient satisfaction results revealed high rankings for the Interactive Patient Television System, prompting Metro Health to add the patient education component.
The eVideon system gives patients access to personalized entertainment, education, Internet and facility communication through their in-room televisions. Patients can access on-demand content 24/7/365, through their pillow speakers, and watch diagnostic, treatment and post-visit educational content. Content is tailored to individual medical conditions and provides patients with a stronger point-of-reference to help them understand and take part in their own recuperation process. Metro Health staff members report that increased patient understanding raises the discussion level and the patients' ability to communicate more effectively with staff.
With the eVideon patient education component, nursing staff can assign patients an unlimited number of videos from any PC, which automatically appear in the patient's list of educational videos on their television. The patient/family can then view the video(s) at their convenience and caregivers can monitor patient progress from a PC. "When the patient has watched the entire video, nurses can follow up with the patient and family and answer any questions they might have. The new process will be much more convenient and efficient for the nursing staff," says Linda Dimberg, RN, nursing informatics coordinator at Metro Health.
Physicians also agree the education component helps Metro Health maintain a higher standard of care. "Being able to personally choose and deliver important medical information directly to the patient so they can view it in the privacy of their own rooms is incredible," says Dr. Bradley Clegg, DO, physician at Metro Health. "It raises the level of personal attention we can provide to each and every one of our patients and their families."
The implementation of eVideon's education component has expanded Metro Health's educational resources and delivery capabilities through the addition of 350 patient education videos to Metro Health's eVideon library. In addition, the technology allows hundreds of patients to simultaneously learn about their health needs at their bedsides, and lets Metro Health convey consistent messages about any given condition.
Metro Health uses eVideon to broaden its personalized educational and entertainment options for patients, and the same system that fulfills prescribed educational requirements also meets a broad range of patient entertainment preferences. Metro Health patients, visitors and staff have access to a wide variety of digital media, including high definition digital TV, DVD-quality newly-released movies and professional development programming.
"eVideon is designed to streamline work flow and extend health facilities' resources. However, its most important goal is transforming the patient experience," says Optimal Solutions President Jeff Ingle. "Patients expect more choices and technology that rivals the options they can access from home or on vacation."
Recognizing the wide range of users in a healthcare setting, Optimal Solutions designed eVideon so that even technology-challenged patients and staff can easily follow its intuitive design and control their content and surroundings. Metro Health staff members spend minimal time training patients to use the system and report patients regularly comment on how much they enjoy having such a wide range of options to improve their stay.
